ANTONIO PROHIAS,
THE COLD WAR CARTOONIST, AND "SPY VS SPY" CREATOR

-A CONVERSATION WITH THE GENIUS ANTONIO PROHIAS

-DIALOGANDO CON EL GENIO
ANTONIO PROHIAS

Friendship allows an open and spontaneous dialogue. The advice in these memoirs is part of the talks I had with Antonio Prohías, my remembered mentor in the art of political cartooning. This interesting story about the creator of The Sinister Man (El Hombre Siniestro) and Spy Vs. Spy (Espía contra Espía) narrates the most interesting moments of his professional life. The works of Prohias awarded him as the Cartoonist of the Cold War.

COLD WAR/GUERRA FRIA

I continued the work towards liberty and democracy beliefs of my mentor Antonio Prohias. My caricatures for Diario La Prensa covered the Cold War during the 1970s and 1980s. Today, when Russia tries to return to the former USSR and change its name of communism to "21st Century Socialism," nothing seemed to be different for the left and the rest

of their followers.

Then, History continues, and we, as political cartoonists, must draw these graphic documents as witnesses that enrich the truth for future citizens.

HONDURAS

The tropical paradise where democracy and law are jokes. Honduras' history is a timeline where corrupt politicians and military accomplices run together without mercy. The influence of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela is adding more misery thanks to the oligarchy in power inside the government, which has absolute control of the three forces
of the state.

Let's have fun visiting different situations that repeat themselves in a never-ending corrupted cycle.

THE WORLD/EL MUNDO

From a satiric perspective, what is happening today and yesterday? Antonio Prohias told me that we cartoonists are like gladiators fighting in the circus arena. Pointing his thumb up and down, he remarked that we would do some in the audience delighted but others extremely mad. I would add that there is a comical circus where the controversial, sometimes tragic political cosmos can also be converted into ironic laughs.
